In-principle approval
The Union Cabinet gave its initial go-ahead to set up the 8th Central Pay Commission.
Terms of Reference approved
The Cabinet finalised what the Commission is actually asked to examine — pay, allowances, pensions and service conditions — after consulting ministries, state governments, and staff-side representatives. The government indicated the revised pay is intended to take effect from 1 January 2026.
Commission formally constituted
A Gazette notification confirmed the panel: Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as Chairperson, Prof. Pulak Ghosh (IIM Bangalore) as part-time Member, and Pankaj Jain as Member-Secretary. The Commission is based in Chanderlok Building, Janpath, New Delhi.
DA raised to 60%
A 2-percentage-point Dearness Allowance hike took DA from 58% to 60% of basic pay. This is a routine revision under the existing 7th CPC formula — it is separate from the 8th CPC and does not indicate any part of the new pay structure has been decided.
Consultation and data collection phase
The Commission opened a feedback channel on the MyGov portal and began collecting workforce data from ministries and departments. Employee unions and pensioner associations submitted memorandums with their demands, including a higher fitment factor and pension reforms.
Regional consultation in Lucknow
The Commission held stakeholder meetings covering salary and service-condition concerns, part of a broader round of regional consultations.
Data collection deadline extended
The deadline for ministries and departments to submit workforce data (including contractual/outsourced staff details) was pushed to 31 July 2026, and consultations are continuing with more regional meetings planned.
Next DA revision, around July 2026
A further 2–3 percentage point DA increase (taking it from 60% toward ~63%) is anticipated under the routine twice-yearly 7th CPC formula, based on recent inflation data. This has not been officially announced as of this writing, and — like the January revision — will not be part of the 8th CPC's own recommendations.
Commission's report
The 18-month deadline from the November 2025 constitution date points to a report around May 2027. Past commissions have sometimes taken longer than their formal deadline.
Cabinet approval & implementation
Based on how the 7th CPC played out (report submitted Nov 2015, implementing order issued July 2016, pay actually credited August 2016 with arrears back to January 2016), a similar few-month gap between report and actual disbursement is a reasonable expectation this time too — with arrears likely calculated back to the 1 January 2026 reference date.
